Rubicon 10th anniversary and moab editions join lineup. introductionthe jeep wrangler is arguably older than anything beyond pickup trucks, tracing its roots to field duty 70 years ago. Wrangler has been modernized with a contemporary engine, electronics inside and underneath, and the body panels are now artfully curved for stiffness while appearing flat. however, the wrangler remains the most maneuverable and trail capable vehicle from a showroom and will go places most owners don't dare drive. The delta in wheelbase (the distance from front wheel center to rear) is similar to that between a regular cab and crew cab pickup. heated leather upholstery is available for wrangler. No jeeper ever had it quite like this. all wranglers are powered by chrysler's 24-valve 3. 6-liter v6, here rated at 285 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. There's a choice of 6-speed manual or 5-speed automatic transmission. Indeed, they will travel the interstate with a modicum of comfort and civility but that's not what they're built for. Wranglers are better suited to all-weather urban runabouts, those living on a beach or off the grid or beaten path, or for those whose idea of a freeway is a fast section of dry wash or graded dirt run in 2wd. The removable hardtop comes off in three pieces, a pair of t-tops with a sunroof over the rear seat. At least the usb port means music without discs or tapes getting dusty. we've driven rubicons on their namesake trail, oregon's tillamook forest, michigan dunes and all the best (worst) stuff moab has to offer, in far more comfort than wranglers of old. Typically it averages in the teens and doesn't change much between daily driving and long highway runs. the current-generation wrangler was introduced as a 2007 model. 2011 brought a refined interior. Two-wheel drive (2wd) is standard, but 4wd is available for both the base model 29,290) and the limited 38,205). the base model jeep commander comes standard with a 3. 7-liter sohc v6, rated at 210 horsepower and 235 pound-feet of torque. The v6 is mated to a five-speed automatic transmission designed to balance performance and fuel economy. on 4wd models, the standard system is jeep's quadra-trac i, which is an automatic full-time all-wheel-drive system enhanced by electronic traction control. standard features on the commander include air conditioning, am/fm stereo with cd player and 6 speakers, power windows, power heated mirrors, power eight-way driver's seat, flipper glass on the liftgate with remote control, all-terrain tires on 17-inch cast aluminum wheels with tire-pressure monitoring, and speed control. the commander limited comes with a bigger engine, more sophisticated driveline engineering and a wide array of comfort and convenience options. Abs braking is complimented with electronic stability control (esp) to enhance driver control. Brake assist, a system that actively applies maximum braking in panic situations, works to provide the shortest possible stopping distances. Side-curtain air bags with a roll detection system deploy in case of rollover and/or side impact. Front air bags are multi-stage type that deploy in stages according to the severity of an impact event. The frame and body structure are constructed to manage impact energy in the event of a collision, working in conjunction with the air bag and seat belt systems, which are equipped with belt pretensioners and constant-force retractors. walkaroundthe commander is instantly recognizable as a jeep, thanks to liberal use of jeep design cues, such as the seven-slot grille, trapezoidal wheel wells, and squared-off lines with flat surfaces. Exposed allen head bolts along the wheelwells and in the headlamp module are decorative, intended to create a technical look. the commander is larger than the grand cherokee: longer by 2 inches and nearly 4 inches taller, due mostly to a stepped roof line that makes headroom for the rear-seat passengers. The stepped effect is concealed by a roof rack rail, which is standard on all models. Body sides are more vertical than those on most suvs, consistent with jeep design heritage. From the rear, the flat hatch and prominently squared-off d-pillar assist handles help define a boxier space that reminds us of the hummer h2. interiora sense of spaciousness is the reason customers will be attracted to the commander. From the driver's seat, the commander retains the cozy look and feel of a grand cherokee. The difference begins behind the driver, where the raised roof permits use of stadium seating, in which each row is higher than the one in front of it. second- and third-row passengers have enhanced forward visibility. Overhead skylights add an airy feeling for passengers in the second row. The skylights are fixed and don't open, but they have pull-out shades to filter light and reduce heat. the third-row seats will accommodate an adult, but seem more likely to be designed for children in the eight- to 10-year-old range. To access the rear, the second-row seat flops forward, allowing a careful adult a reasonably easy path to one of the split-bench seats, which are divided 50-50. My average size and weight allowed me to make my way into the third row with minimal effort. Still, the commander is only a few inches bigger than a standard grand cherokee, so back-row seating is not ideal for taller adults and longer trips. The third row does have available rear heating and air conditioning controls, and nearby power points. both the second- and third-row seats fold perfectly flat to create a load floor, and there is an l-shaped storage bin located behind the third-row seats. The arrangement means that there will always be a practical way to configure the commander for either more passenger seating, or added cargo and gear. It strikes us as versatile, with few designed-in tradeoffs. The load floor height is relatively high, however, at 36. 2 inches, meaning it requires extra effort to load cargo. driving impressionwe had the opportunity to spend a day in the commander starting in the philadelphia area, leaving the city and traveling toward the pocono mountains, first on interstate highways and finally, on smaller two-lane roads. It was warm and humid that day in philadelphia, but the commander reminded us of the kind of vehicle we'd like to get into on a cold, windy day. There is a tangible sheltering quality that immediately appealed to us. for a seven-passenger suv, the commander feels remarkably nimble and responsive around town. Steering, a rack-and-pinion design, feels more precise than the truck-based suvs we'd been driving. We noticed the commander, like the grand cherokee, is just a little quicker, better balanced, and a little more conducive to aggressive driving than the average suv. Throttle response around town is gratifyingly direct, which we later discovered is due to the fact that the automatic transmission is a multi-speed design, that effectively supplies two second gear ratios. Punching the throttle signaled the automatic to kick down into the lower ratio to supply greater acceleration. Otherwise, a taller ratio with a smoother upshift would be used. Jeeps are not the most aerodynamic vehicles in the world, but wind and tire noise seemed unremarkable, well within the range of the average suv and something less than bigger, square-bodied truck-based 4x4s. The standard v6, which we did not drive, is epa rated to deliver 17 mpg city and 21 highway, compared to 15/20 for the 4. 7 v8. In terms of horsepower, the two engines are not that far apart either, but the 4. 7 appears to be the superior power plant when it comes to torque. It's more comfortable and convenient, offering more cargo and rear-seat passenger space and a higher tow rating. Still, the traditional two-door wrangler has its charms and virtues. We enjoy all of them. The three-piece hard top has larger windows and is offered in body-matching paint on 2011 wrangler sahara models. All wranglers have a 3. 8-liter v6 engine, which develops 202 horsepower and 237 pound-feet of torque. A 6-speed manual comes standard, a 4-speed automatic transmission is optional. A hardtop is available, also, offering greater security. despite the added features and upgraded interior, the 2011 wrangler is not really an alternative to a car. It isn't comfortable by car standards. Fuel economy would merit a gas guzzler tax, and it isn't cheap. By 4wd standards it is considered the standard, however, especially in rubicon trim. A three-piece modular hard top called the freedom top 735) is available for all wrangler models. Half-metal doors with locks for the soft top are a no-cost option on the sport. Seat-mounted front side airbags for torso protection are optional 490). walkaroundthe jeep wrangler is one of the most widely recognizable vehicles in the world. The upright windshield is slightly curved for better aerodynamics and reduced wind noise. It can be folded down to rest on the hood for true open-air motoring, but that is not a simple chore as it once was. This generation wrangler may look as square as the first jeeps, but not a single panel on it is completely flat. The sunrider soft top slides back half way, like a huge sunroof over the front seats. The optional three-piece modular hard top (freedom top) has two front panels that easily pop on and off like a t-top, and can be stored behind the rear seat. The third panel over the rear seat can be removed separately and stored in the garage. for 2011 the windows in the hard top are notably larger, helping driver vision and passenger claustrophobia. On sahara models the top can be ordered painted to match the rest of the bodywork. under the body, there's a boxed frame with seven crossmembers. Wide-spaced frame rails cradle the fuel tank between the wheels. Door panels have new surfaces, armrests, storage nets (nets drain better than pockets), and door pulls that won't break fingernails. The center panel controls have been moved closer to occupants for an easy reach, omni-directional air vents, and a lockable center console; some models offer a 115-vac power outlet. wranglers have traditionally been known as compact inside. The comfortable high-back front seats are surrounded by more shoulder and hip room than previous-generation models, and the removable rear seat provides more shoulder, hip and leg room for each of the two passengers. There's also more space behind the rear seat, which folds to provide nearly twice the cargo capacity as before; with the rear seat removed the two-door has 61 cubic feet of cargo space, more than many midsize suvs. the unlimited is larger. The headrests flip back, so they don't need to be removed, making it easy to switch between cargo and rear-seat-passenger modes. The unlimited can seat three in the back seat. The reason: rear passengers in the two-door wrangler sit between the wheel wells, while in the unlimited they sit ahead of the rear axle. instrumentation is clean and simple, against a background of dull (neither flat nor gloss) plastic. Solid square buttons look good and are easy to understand and operate. There's a new steering wheel with integral cruise and audio controls. The materials have more feel and texture yet remain easy-to-clean plastic that works well in the utilitarian wrangler. the wrangler is available with heated leather seats, upgraded usb input, bluetooth streaming audio, power heated mirrors, multiple power outlets, and automatic temperature control. All have additional noise abatement measures but don't think of a wrangler as a car. the optional 368-watt infinity sound system comes with seven speakers, including a subwoofer.
